Pinacoteca Ambrosiana

Founded in Milan in 1618, the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana holds the art collection of Cardinal Federico Borromeo, who had founded the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in 1607. The Pinacoteca was to serve the Ambrosiana Academy, which trained artists. Borromeo described his art collection in his treatise, Musaeum [1625]. Other collections joined Borromeo's to create the current collection. (accessed July 13, 2016).
