There is doubt as to who owned the Danae before it came into the Spanish collection. The Prado Museum has speculated that it could have been purchased sometime between 1617-1621 by Giovanni Carlo Doria in Genoa. However, there has also been the suggestion that the Danae now in the Hermitage is the picture that was owned by Doria.
