P. Della Pergola suggested that the painting was owned by Alfonso I d'Este. A 1553 document survives in which Alfonso asked Francisco de los Cobos, secretary to Charles V, to choose a painting from his collection, including a "Judit." There is no evidence, however, that Cobos selected this picture, which was most likely inherited by Lucrezia d'Este.
