Owner Name: Medici
In possession from: 1631 to Present
Location: Galleria degli Uffizi
Notes:
The painting was transferred to Firenze as part of the dowry for the wedding of Ferdinando II de'Medici and Vittoria della Rovere, Princess of Urbino. In celebration of the wedding an opera 'Le Nozze degli dei' was performed in the courtyard of the Pitti Palace, Florence, 8 July 1637. The libretto for this masque was written by Giovanni Carlo Coppola, the Bishop of Muro. The choreography was done by Agniolo Ricci and the scenographer was the Italian architect Alfonso Parigi the Younger (1606–1656). Della Bella's etchings are the only surviving record of Parigi's staging.
